|
| Description: | There is an urban myth that goes something like this: if you do not have a business continuity plan in place before disaster strikes, you have only a 20% chance of still being in business one year after the disaster. It is considered a myth because no one has tried to disprove it - it is quoted as fact. But ... do you want your firm to be the one to prove it?
During this session, you will be presented with the ten commonly held principles of business continuity planning, along with a brief description of each. You will then take part in a tabletop exercise that can be applied to all sizes of law firms, centered around one of the principles such as building a plan or emergency response. The session will end with a question and answer period.
This will be an interactive session, so whether you're a beginner at business continuity planning or a seasoned professional, the experiences being shared should be helpful to everyone.

|
| Location:
| Lawren Harris Room |
| Speaker(s):
| Bill Wilkinson -
|
| Description: | The focus in many organizations today is on results: finding better solutions - faster. To optimize performance, law office managers must be able to effectively resolve issues, settle differences, and implement solutions on every level. Using the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) Bill will facilitate a workshop that will provide a means for participants to either discover or gain a deeper understanding of their personal conflict resolution style of others and how it affects organizational performance. This workshop targets four (4) key objectives:
* Expanding Self Awareness * Developing Awareness of Others * Assessing Conflict Situations * Applying New Skills
Participants will receive an overview to five basic conflict-handling modes and learn how and when each mode is typically most appropriate or inappropriate as well as the insights as to their pitfalls when either is used too much or too little. Unlike similar programs, this workshop does not advocate any one mode over another as the best approach to resolving conflict but instead demonstrates that all modes are effective if applied to the appropriate situation and if used in a balanced way. |

Oct 26, 2007 (09:00 AM - 10:30 AM) |
|
| Location:
| Lawren Harris Room |
| Speaker(s):
| Vicki Wilson -
|
| Description: | No matter where we work, in whatever industry, one of the most common things we hear as professional development practitioners is:
We would like individuals to be able to better control their emotions at work.
In order to do this we need to start by helping individuals better understand the connection between their emotions and their actions, otherwise known as their behaviors. These behaviors include their own personal behavior and their behaviors towards others. In other words we feel first and act after.
Things to think about to help you determine your own level of Emotional Intelligence:
· I listen without interrupting or jumping to conclusions about what the party will say next.
· I consider how my behavior and actions will impact others before I act.
· I maintain my composure under fire.
· I get up and move forward after facing adversity.
· I am effective at taking the long view of things.
So if this is true in us it is also true of others. Do you try to manage or deal with situations on the surface from what you see, or do you try to really understand what the ‘root’ cause is? Think of it as an iceberg: there is always more to it than what you see on the surface.
At some point in your career you may find yourself in an environment where everyone has a strong background in Human Resources or Law Knowledge and skills as you do. So ask yourself. How can I stand out? The answer to that question is to strengthen your:
